Marine Basic First Aid

This course in emergency care provides general knowledge of first aid in the marine environment. Candidates are taught how to intervene in life-threatening emergencies including; unconsciousness, choking, rescue breathing, CPR, and deadly bleeding. Recommended for Mariners pursuing a certificate or endorsement as a Master or Chief Mate, designated first aid attendant on a near costal voyage, class 2 or sheltered waters voyage

16 hours

Prerequisite
Minimum age: 16 years old

Completion Requirements
100% attendance, skills demonstration, and 75% min. passing grade on written exam

Certification
5-year certification in Marine Basic First Aid issued by Transport Canada

Recertification
No recertification availalble

Course Content
Assessment of needs of ill or injured persons and threats to own safety
Appreciation of body structure and functions
Positioning of person
The unconscious person
Resuscitation techniques (including CPR C)
Control bleeding
Management of shock
Burns, scalds, and injuries caused by electricity
Rescue and transport of person
Other topics including improvising bandages, rescue in enclosed
spaces, infectious diseases, and personal health and hygiene
